Here are some useful visa classes required in particular circumstances, including bridging visas, return visas for current and former Australian permanent residents.





Former Resident visa (subclass 151)


​​This visa allows former permanent residents and certain people who served in the Australian Defence Force to live in Australia as permanent residents.

To be eligible, you must:

  • have spent nine years in Australia as a permanent resident before you turned 18
  • be under 45 years of age
  • have never been an Australian citizen
  • have kept close business, cultural or personal ties with Australia whilst you have been living overseas

or

  • you must have served at least three months continuous service in the Australian Defence Force before 19 January 1981.

Resident Return visa (subclass 155 157)


​​​​​A Resident Return visa is a travel facility for:

  • current Australian permanent residents
  • some former Australian permanent residents
  • some former Australian citizens.

You are not eligible for this visa if your last permanent visa was cancelled.

Both the 155 and 157 visas are permanent visas. The difference between the visas is the length of the travel facility:

  • Subclass 155 – up to five years from the date of grant.
  • Subclass 157 – 3 months from date of grant.

Australian citizenship


Australian citizenship is an important step in your migration story. Australian citizenship is a privilege that offers enormous rewards. By becoming an Australian citizen, you are joining a unique national community.

There two major pathways to acquire a citizenship are:

    • Australian citizenship by descent
      • the applicant must have been born outside Australia;
      • at least one of the applicant’s parents must have been an Australian citizen when you were born;
      • if the application is approved, an Australian citizenship by descent extract document will be sent to the address provided on the application form.

 

  • PR applying for Australian citizenship
    • the applicant is a permanent resident at time of application and time of decision;
    • the applicant meets the residence requirements;
    • the applicant is of good character;
    • the applicant has a basic knowledge of the English language;
    • the applicant intends to reside or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia;
    • the applicant has an adequate knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges of Australian citizenship.

Permanent residents applying for the citizenship will be required to sit the citizenship test if they are not older than 60 years old.
